He was borrn in 1921. he had attended  local schools before he worked in a bank for a short time. at the age of nineteen he joined the army and rose through the rank. he became a general in 1960.

                In 1967, he was appointed acting president of his country and the following year he was electd full president. He was re-elected president six times.

                In May 1998, two month after he was re-elected president for the last time, mass demonstration and riots caused him to resign from office.
